78% Nonwhite Birmingham, Alabama, Declares “Gun Violence a Health Crisis”

The 78 percent nonwhite city of Birmingham, Alabama, is now so devastated by nonwhite crime that the city has official declared gun violence as a “public health crisis.”

According to local media reports, the City of Birmingham has “announced an anti-gun violence campaign and declared gun violence a public health crisis for the city and Jefferson County.”

Families of those killed by gun violence in Birmingham took part in the launch of yet another anti-murder “campaign” called “Increase Peace”—which is destined to end up in the same dead end that all previous such attempts have gone.

Dr. Mark Wilson, Health Officer for the Jefferson County Department of Health, declared gun violence a public health crisis in Jefferson County and vowed to help the city in its efforts.

Wilson cited statistics showing 90 percent of all Birmingham homicides involve guns; 86 percent of those victims are black.

“If one group more than others is affected such that makes a health disparity, and if it’s preventable, we should make a special effort to address it. Violence is one of those things,” Wilson said.

“If we have one part of our community that’s suffering from disease, premature death or violence, it’s affecting all of us,” Wilson said. “The Jefferson County Department of Health stands ready to work with others to address this problem. We don’t have all the answers, but we are committed to supporting the city and others in this effort. Willing to be put resources and people into that effort.”

Woodfin shared statistics about the prevalence of guns and gun violence in Birmingham from 2018 and the first month of 2019.

In January, there were eight homicides and 18 felony assaults and more than 800 gun-related 911 calls in Birmingham. Police have seized 320 guns so far in 2019.

In 2018, more than 2,300 guns were seized.

The city is also joining in the national “Stop the Bleed” campaign to teach people how to stop heavy bleeding to hopefully prevent loss of life. Woodfin said UAB Hospital officials will be holding classes for residents at city recreation centers beginning in mid-March.

The city’s west side is the “community” most plagued by homicide. Nearly 8 percent of the city’s violent deaths were the result of people using deadly force to protect themselves or others in what were ruled justifiable homicides. Retaliation for other acts of violence frequently fueled Birmingham homicides.

Most of the homicide victims were killed inside homes. Many had prior criminal records. The vast majority were “African-American males,” media reports coyly said.

Meanwhile, all the official data shows clearly the link between race and violent crime, ignored by the race-denying liberals “seeking answers” to the homicide rate in US cities such as Birmingham.

According to data collected by the Everytown Research group, the U.S. gun homicide rate is 25 times that of other high-income countries.

Gun homicides are concentrated in cities—half of all gun homicides took place in just 127 cities, which represented nearly a quarter of the U.S. population.

Within these cities, gun homicides are “most prevalent in racially segregated neighborhoods with high rates of poverty” and “black Americans represent the majority of gun homicide victims. In fact, Black Americans are 10 times more likely than white Americans to die by gun homicide.”
