Liberals in Chicago believe that a new $25 per transaction gun tax will somehow curb black gun violence in the city. The new tax was implemented on April 1 in Cook County, the second most populous county in the US which has Chicago as its county seat.
The tax was created by County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and approved by county commissioners as part of the 2013 county budget.
In proposing the tax, Preckwinkle said she was looking for a way to defray the costs of gun violence on county taxpayers, particularly in the public health system (where the injured are treated) or the local criminal justice system.
All figures however show that Chicago’s extraordinarily high black gun crime rate is not the result of firearms purchased legally in Cook County, but rather of the black criminal underworld. In other words, law-abiding citizens are once again being called upon to pay for the criminal damage of lawbreakers.
Chicago had a murder rate of 14.5 per 100,000 residents in 2012. Murders in the city peaked first in 1974, with 970 murders when the city’s population was over 3 million people (resulting in a murder rate of around 29 per 100,000), and again in 1992 with 943 murders, resulting in a murder rate of 34 per 100,000.
In 2008, murders rebounded to 510, breaking 500 for the first time since 2003. For 2009 the murder count was 458, and in 2010 it was 435. By 2012 this had risen to 506 once again.
In 2009, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 54% of all murders committed, overwhelmingly with guns, are murders of black people. Black people are about 13% of the population.
The Justice Department reports that between 1980 and 2008, “blacks were six times more likely than whites to be homicide victims and seven times more likely than whites to commit homicide.”
In other words, black criminal elements are responsible for the vast majority of gun violence in the US and they make up the killers in utterly disproportionate numbers.
As one commentator added, “An occasional white maniac” does not erase this racial fact, and until politicians become honest enough to address the issue of race, idiotic measures like “gun taxes” will still waste everyone’s time.
