An internationally famous heart surgeon and the former director of Greece’s European Union Military Staff are among the candidates put forward for election to the European Parliament by Greece’s Golden Dawn movement.
Elections to the European Parliament are set to take place in Europe from May 22–25, with Greece’s vote date set for the 25th.
The far-leftist establishment was hoping that its mass arrests of Golden Dawn parliamentarians and political leaders would halt that movement’s political progress, but it seems that the opposite has now happened.
An entirely new wave of Greek nationalists—a large number drawn from the top echelons of Greek society—have now stepped forward to carry the party’s banner at the Euro elections, at which the party is expected to win a number of seats.
Golden Dawn candidate and heart surgeon Dr. Basil Chalvatzoulis, M.D. Ph.D., is internationally known. Fluent in two foreign languages, (English and Swedish), he worked in the Giorgo Papanikolaou Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic and has performed thousands of complicated surgical procedures which have saved as many lives.
Dr. Chalvatzoulis also served as First Vice President of the PAOK football club between 1996 and 2004. When asked what was his greatest achievement, he cited a procedure he carried out in 1996 in which a patient was given a seven-bypass heart surgery. The patient is still alive, and Dr. Chalvatzoulis is the only surgeon in Greece ever to have successfully carried out such an operation.
Retired lieutenant general Synadinos Eleftherios, who once commanded the Greek army’s Special Forces, is another candidate for Golden Dawn.
Lt. General Eleftherios served the Greek army for almost four decades as an officer. He graduated from military school in 1979 as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, and then went on to graduate from the Special Forces School of Officers and the National Defense College. He graduated from the Paratroopers in 1980.
As commander of the Special Forces, he has served in Cyprus and Kosovo. He was also Head Sector Planner for the Olympic Games. He has been honored with a wide variety of medals, commendations, and decorations.
Retired lieutenant general Georgios Epitideios is another high-profile Golden Dawn candidate. He is a graduate of the Military Academy, the Higher War College, and National Defense College. He has also attended the Advanced Officers Artillery School in the United States and Greece. He holds a degree in Public Law and Political Science from the University of Athens, and speaks English and French.
His most prominent military posts were Staff Officer at the Headquarters of the Allied Powers of Europe (SHAPE), the International Military Staff of NATO, and Director of the Department of Current Operations and Crisis Management of the Military Staff of the European Union (EUMS).
In his address to the Greek people, after choosing to run for European Parliament as a Golden Dawn candidate, Lt. General Epitideios said:
“The upcoming elections for Government and the European Parliament are particularly important because the outcome will largely determine whether and how our country will continue to exist as a free and sovereign state, and if Europe will continue to maintain its historical and cultural identity or will evolve into something completely different from what it is today.
“The decisions taken at the European Parliament decide the fate of the nations of Europe and have a direct impact on our daily lives. It is therefore necessary for the voice of the Greek nationalists to be represented, as this is one of dynamism and for the defense of national interests.
“During this period, our country is facing the greatest risk to its existence ever in its history as an independent state. We are being attacked by enemies, who by any means, seek to dismantle the elements which make up the concept of nation and state.
“These specific forces seek to destroy religion, history, education, health, economy, justice, national defense and security, our cultural heritage, flagrantly disregard our Constitution and individual liberties, arrested and illegally detained our leader, deputies and officers who were democratically elected into office, financially impoverished the people, forced a mass exodus of our youth, and driven thousands of desperate countrymen to suicide.
“Through all this turmoil, we must not remain indifferent—we must fight. I will fight to the fullest extent possible for my country.”
